#SubstanceOverHype TBT: Mizchif – All The Areas
Let us time travel to back in 1999 when you were still young or better still in the form of liquid and were not even a thought to your parents. The scene was totally dominated by Kwaito and House music tunes receiving heavy rotation on prominent Radio stations and various music TV shows. Now this track by the forever loved and no longer with us Mizchif from Zimbabwe with All The Areas would break the shared airtime between the two genres on urban traditional media.
He was fresh from the success of his previous single called Fashionable and in his words “Let’s move on” - now this song fought blood, sweat and tears to leave the industry door wide open for Rap music, the legend was rapping in the Queen’s language in an accent that was heavily Westernized, that wasn’t enough for skeptics but the track was still positively received. The pristine content made it more lovable with a vivid direction of the typical braggadocio with elements of conscious uplifted raps which educated the young minds about the principles of life. His punch lines were very relatable when he says “I refuse to clean up like Joburg city” look…let us not even attempt to refute the bar because the state has gone worse. He rocks these lyrics with a simple effective flow that contains internal rhymes. “I keep them awake like witnesses of Jehova/ Pray and wishing to a folly clover/ Their mind is older, with an empty folder/ Unpaid dues and weight above their shoulder/ The mischievous empire getting bolder, crap ass kids I got X-Files like Mulder/” then the hard kick hits then a well-penned hook strikes your eardrum. All the areas are represented equally, it is unmistakable that real recognize real when you listen to his immaculate and tightly fit rhymes to this Boom Bap beat and exquisite production by Caramel. This song is taken from the album Life From All Angles released courtesy of Eargasm entertainment. This is a certified classic.
